Maximum allowable body fat

These are the limits the Army Body Fat Calculator checks your result against. Your ceiling depends on age, sex, and whether you're on active duty or enlisting — find your age band below. The active-duty column tightens as you get older; the enlisting standard is four points more lenient for men.

Army body fat examples: what passes, what fails

Six common profiles scored by the Army Body Fat Calculator with the 2023 one-site formula. Notice how a single inch on the tape — not bodyweight — decides most of them: active-duty limits tighten with age, while the enlisting standard runs four points more lenient for men.

How to measure your abdomen

AT THE NAVEL

The 2023 tape test is one horizontal measurement of your bare abdomen, taken at the level of your navel. Keep the tape parallel to the floor all the way around, read it on a relaxed exhale, and average three passes. Get this single number right and the Army Body Fat Calculator handles the rest.

1

Find the landmark

Locate your belly button. The tape goes around your bare abdomen at that exact height, level all the way around — not at your natural waist or hips.
2

Relax and exhale

Stand naturally with arms at your sides. Breathe out gently and don't suck in — read the tape at the end of a normal exhale.
3

Read it three times

Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin. Take three readings, average them, and round to the nearest half inch.
COMMON MISTAKES THAT FAIL YOU UNFAIRLY
Sucking in or flexing your abs
Measuring over a shirt or waistband
Tape at your waist instead of level with the navel
Pulling the tape tight enough to dent the skin
EXCLUSIVE INSIGHT

Under the 2023 formula, trimming your waist passes you faster than losing weight — because weight carries a negative coefficient. An inch off the tape beats pounds off the scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)?

The ABCP (AR 600-9) is the Army's body-fat standard. Soldiers who exceed the height/weight screening table are taped; if they're also over the body-fat limit for their age and sex, they're enrolled in the program until they're back within standard.

What changed in the 2023 tape test?

Army Directive 2023-11 replaced the old multi-site method (neck and waist, plus hip for women) with a single abdominal measurement taken at the navel. This one-site formula is what the calculator above uses.

How does the 3-step screening work?

First the height/weight table. Pass it and you're done — no tape. Exceed it and you're taped for body fat. Only if you're over both the weight screen and the body-fat limit are you flagged for the ABCP.

ABCP vs ACFT — what's the difference?

The ABCP measures body composition (are you within the fat standard). The ACFT measures fitness (can you perform). They're separate programs — but scoring 540+ on the ACFT with at least 80 per event exempts you from the tape test.

Is this the official Army calculator?

It reproduces the official 2023 body-fat tables cell-for-cell, but it's unofficial — the measurement your unit records is the one that counts.

Which body-fat formula does it use?

The 2023 one-site method: −26.97 − 0.12 × weight + 1.99 × abdomen for men, and −9.15 − 0.015 × weight + 1.27 × abdomen for women, rounded half-to-even exactly like the official tables.

What body-fat percentage do I need to pass?

It depends on age, sex, and whether you're active duty or enlisting — from 18% to 30% for men and 30% to 36% for women. Find your row in the standards table above.

Why does losing weight barely change my result?

Weight carries a small negative coefficient in the formula, so dropping pounds moves the body-fat number only slightly. Reducing your abdominal measurement is what actually lowers it.

Does the Active Duty / Enlisting toggle matter?

Yes — for men the enlisting standard is 4 points more lenient than the active-duty standard at every age. For women the two are identical.

What if the tape test says I'm over?

Exceeding the tape standard isn't final. The Army lets you request a supplemental body-fat assessment using higher-accuracy methods — a DXA scan, the InBody 770, or a Bod Pod — and that result takes precedence over the tape. Ask your commander or fitness facility about availability.

What if I'm exempt through the ACFT?

Scoring 540 or higher on the ACFT with at least 80 points in every event exempts you from the body-fat tape test entirely.
